A BRIEF HISTORY OF HONDA
Perhaps best known as a successful global automaker, Honda got its start as a motorcycle manufacturer in 1948. It wasn’t until 1963 that the first Honda car was produced, but by 1972, the brand had an international hit on its hands with the Civic. The company doubled-down on great cars with the debut of the 1976 Honda Accord that has so far sold more than 12.5 million units since its launch.
Honda also opened its first U.S. auto plant in 1976, although the company has had a presence here for a lot longer than that. Honda founded its U.S. subsidiary in Los Angeles in 1959 when it still focused on two-wheeled transportation. Today, the American Honda Motor Company is headquartered in Torrance, Calif.
